Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.
In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

oh my gods… WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN???
I have never read a book by Holly Black so I didn’t know what to expect going in. Not only that but The Cruel Prince was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and seeing as I haven’t been loving hyped books as much as I had hoped recently, I was very nervous. Luckily it did not disappoint!
I was hooked from the start with the mesmerizing writing, the faetastic characters, and the spectacular world building!
The story centers around Jude who, along with her two sisters, was taken from the human world and into faerie. She has spent 10 years learning the ways of faerie and though she is not welcome by most, she will do anything to win her place at Court. What she doesn’t expect is the secrets she’ll uncover, the people who she must put her trust in, and the betrayals by those she thought she knew.
Y’all, let me just say that this is the faerie book that we have all been waiting for and that we all deserve!!
I LOVED the characters so so much!
Jude was raised by the man who murdered her father and mother, the woman he supposedly loved, and forced to live the life of the fae. One would think she’d despise everything having to do with Faerie, especially Madoc but it’s quite the opposite and I think that’s one of the things I love most about her. She does things that one doesn’t expect and they always throw me off but in a good way. She’s also incredibly smart and cunning and brave and caring. She’ll do everything in her power to protect those she loves even if it means putting her life on the line.
Cardan is the youngest and one of the cruelest princes. Although he is wicked, he managed to find a place in my heart. Don’t ask me how or why because I’m still trying to figure it out. I loved those rare occasions where he showed his vulnerability because it tells me that he has feelings.
I may or may not have taken a look at a couple of pages near the end but there were so many twists and turns that it didn’t matter. I was at the edge of my seat throughout every page. There were so many jaw dropping moments that had me flailing and screaming.
Although I adored the majority of this book, there were a few moments where I was bored and lost interest but I’m going to blame all of that on my reading slump lol.
Overall I highly enjoyed The Cruel Prince and would recommend it to anyone who loves the enchantments of Faerie, morally grey characters, and beautiful writing!
